Prerequisites
Overview
Prior to coming to MMM, there are many things that a student should be prepared for:
Prerequisites
In order to permit maximum flexibility for advanced coursework, some study in the MMM program is accelerated to take advantage of strong quantitative backgrounds of the MMM students. In addition they need to have good background in basic probability and statistics prior to starting the program. Specifically, students need to be familiar with the following topics:
- Probability: Joint, marginal and conditional probabilities of events, Bayes’ rule
- Random variables: Discrete and continuous probability distributions
- Mean, variance, covariance and correlation coefficient
- Binomial and normal probability distributions
- Statistical estimation, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing
Once admitted to the program, we assess the adequacy of your background in this area. The admitted Class of 2014 is required to complete the MMM Probability and Statistics Background form and examination and submit the answers to the MMM office by August 15, 2012. The MMM office strongly encourages students to study and review the material carefully before taking the examination. We suggest studying the material mentioned, taking a course at a community college, or completing an online course such as
- Kellogg Online Statistics Essentials (for enrolled students)
- UC Berkeley Extension - Introduction to Statistics
- Teach Yourself Statistics - Tutorial
Based on the examination results, students found to be deficient in this area will be required to take remedial classes in probability and statistics before arrival on campus.
The examination may be e-mailed as a pdf file to mmm@northwestern.edu or sent directly to our office at the following address:

Course Requirements
To graduate, a MMM student must complete:
- The 6.5 Kellogg core classes, unless pre-waiver received*
- The requirements for at least one Kellogg major
- Managerial Accounting (required during your first year)
- Finance I/II or Finance II (required during your first year)**
- The 3 MMM core courses
- The MMM Integration Project (offered during the Winter quarter of your second year)
- The requirements for the MEM major
- The Kellogg School of Management’s global elective requirement
Additional Notes:
- P/NC may not be used for core or major requirements in either degree.
- Courses used to fulfill the major under the MEM may also be used to fulfill a major under the MBA.
- Students must meet the requirements for both degrees in order to graduate.
*ACCT 430, MGMT 431, MKTG 430, MECN 430, MORS 430, FINC 430, SEEK 440-A
Every moment you spend in the classroom should challenge and engage you. Because we want you to get the most out of your education, we encourage you to waive core courses comparable to classes you’ve taken before. In fact, approximately 50 percent of students waive at least one course. If granted a waiver, a student replaces the waived course with a more advanced elective in the same area.
**Students may opt for Turbo Finance (as opposed to taking Finance I and Finance II broken out) to allow for more room in the first year but this is only recommended of students with a background in finance. Both Finance I and Finance II are required under the dual degree curriculum.
